Is the new remote that good?
Let’s find out 5 new useful features on the new Roku Voice Remote Pro.
5 New Useful Features on Roku Voice Remote Pro
1. Rechargeable battery
Say goodbye to the old types of battery (AAA) because you no longer need them for your new Roku Voice Remote Pro.
Roku has finally listened to customer feedback and introduced a battery pack for their voice remote. The new voice remote pro includes a rechargeable battery that lasts up to two months on a single charge. A full charge will take around two to three hours.
At the bottom of the remote, you’ll find a new port for charging the battery. Unfortunately, it still uses the old micro-USB type instead of the USB-C type. It would be a big update if Roku can provide it with the popular USB-C though.
However, Roku includes the micro-USB cable in the box, so it’s not a big deal to be worried about.
Another drawback is that there is no battery life indicator shown on the TV screen. To check it, you can say “Hey Roku, tell me my battery level.” Or, you can go to Settings > Remotes and Devices.
Roku explains that there will be flashing on the upper right of the screen when the battery is dropping to 75%, 50%, 25%, or lower.
2. Find your remote
Lost your Roku remote? Just say, “Hey Roku, where’s my remote?” and you’ll find it in no time.
Or, you can use the Roku mobile app to help you find your remote.
Losing a remote seems like a pretty common habit among us. We are likely to forget where the last time we put the remote. Or, it might be that the kids place it somewhere we don’t know.
Since the new Roku remote supports voice command, you can just ask it to find it. Then, it will play a loud beeping noise from the small speaker on the remote.
So, with this feature, losing your Roku remote will not be a problem again from now on.
3. Private listening
Your TV sound can be so noisy and disturbing to others, especially if they are having an online meeting. But it would be a bit less fun if your TV sound is too little.
To overcome this problem, Roku provides a headphone jack on the new Roku Voice Remote Pro. Just plug your headphone into your remote and you can have a private listening without disturbing everyone in your house.
The sound will depend on the headphone you’re using. So, pick the best headphone to get a great sound.
4. Hands-free voice on/off switch
The Roku remote can do pretty much anything you need it to do. It comes with both hands-free and push-to-talk voice controls. And now, in the new Roku Voice remote pro, you get to choose between hands-free or push-to-talk voice controls with the flip of a switch.
This makes it easy for you to choose between the two modes, whichever is more convenient for the situation at hand.
In this new Roku Voice remote Pro, you will notice that there are 2 additional buttons with numbers 1 and 2 printed on them.
What are those buttons used for?
Roku decided to add 2 additional buttons called personal shortcuts. With your voice, you can set those 2 buttons to launch a playlist, adjust settings, start watching something, and more without having to stop what you are doing!
Additional observation
Roku has placed four shortcut buttons for various services on the remote for years. In the previous Roku Voice remote, you might find Netflix, Disney+, Hulu, and Apple TV+ buttons at the bottom.
However, in this new remote, there is a little change. Roku has decided to replace the Apple TV+ button with Sling. And the other three remain the same.
Those shortcut buttons have built a love and hate relationship among Roku users. Some said that they were very useful because they could go to the streaming service in just one press. But others said that they were ugly and rarely used because not all Roku users subscribe to those streaming services.
