Philo TV is a streaming service that offers more than 60 channels of live and on-demand TV for just $20 per month. It also provides an unlimited DVR that you can use to save shows and movies for 30 days.

But Philo is not for everyone.

Philo TV is ideal for two kinds of users. Firstly, someone who isn’t interested in cable sports or cable news and can find local channels like ABC, CBS FOX, and NBC using an antenna.

Second, those who do have a main live TV subscription service but aren’t seeing enough of their desired channels and are searching for a cost-effective way to do so.

What can you find on Philo’s home screen?

When you stream Philo using a Google Chromecast, the look and feel will be similar to other types of devices. There are a lot of features on the home screen that you can expect from streaming services.

At the top of the screen, you can see the Trending Content. Right below it, there is a Keep Watching section where you can quickly continue the shows and movies that you’ve already started watching.

The saved section is another name for DVR. In this section, you can find the shows and movies that you have saved in your DVR. Remember that Philo will keep them no more than 30 days. So, you’d better watch them before they are removed.

Keep on scrolling down on the home screen to find more sections like Trending Live, etc.

Philo TV offers various categories like Reality, Kids, True Crime, Comfort Food, Nature and Science, as well as Home Improvements.

Philo Live Guide

Philo live guide is pretty interesting because it is good for browsing as well as scheduling recordings.

At the top of the Live Guide, you will see the favorite channels section. To make a channel becomes your favorite, just click and hold the heart logo.

The next time you open the guide, it will be right at the start. Below your favorites, you’ll see a list of all networks in alphabetical order.

Philo TV Channels

Philo TV provides more than 60 channels. It will take a long time to scroll through. That is why I recommend that you favorite your must-have channels.

This live guide shows you what is on now and up to two weeks in advance.

When you choose a title from the live guide, you are taken immediately to the show if it is already airing.

Here’s something interesting. When you stream a show that is already playing, but when you choose, it’s playing from the beginning rather than live, which is by design; you can change this in your settings if you wish.

The default setting is to start channel playback from the beginning, but you can always change it to live.

Now, if you click on something that is airing later, you’ll be taken to a page with save button.

Click the save button and add it to your DVR or scroll to all showings to see when it is airing.

If there’s a play button, you can watch it right away on demand.

Philo streams video in HD resolution live TV in 720p and on demand in 1080p.

Philo Top Playable

If all your friends and family are talking about a show that they watched the night before and you missed it, this is where you’re going to go to catch up.

At the Top Playable section, you can see the favorited channels at the top and then followed by all channels in alphabetical order.

Philo has a feature known as 72-hour rewind. It lets you watched content that has aired in the last 72 hours. This section includes mostly VOD video-on-demand content. Things saved to DVR can also appear here.

What everything in the Top Playable section has in common is that you can watch it right now. So think of the live guide as what is coming up.

Top Playable, for the most part, is the best of what has already aired.

Philo Saved (DVR)

We are moving now to the Saved section and that is how Philo calls for DVR.

The Saved section displays the shows and movies that you have added to your DVR. You can see the recordings that you have saved based on the recent recording or alphabetical order.

If you record a program before it airs, you’ll be able to skip through the ads.

For instance, I saved a show to my DVR a few weeks ago. When I scroll to the left, I’ll see lots of episodes. But if I hadn’t recorded the show to DVR, there wouldn’t be nearly as many recordings. It would also say VOD for video on demand.

In that case, some ads usually will appear and you can’t skip them. If you want to watch a program in order, such as season one, season two, and season three, you can do so by going to the show tab and clicking on seasons.

Then you’ll be able to filter the available episodes in your DVR by season.

The bottom line is if you want to be able to skip the ads, just save the show or movie to your DVR before it airs. You can do it from the live guide and the search function.

Here’s how to do it from the search function. You can type in 48 for 48 hours and the show page will appear. Then, click on save and add it to your DVR. Keep in mind that you can save as many shows as you want, but you only have 30 days to watch.

Philo Settings

The last section is the Settings. It is where you can go to create profiles for everyone in the house. Philo lets you create profiles of up to 10 users.

Here, you can also change the channel playback setting from beginning to live or live to beginning.

If you want to take care of any billing matters, you can’t do that from your TV. You must log in from your computer to cancel your free trial or paid subscription quickly.

The navigation for Philo is similar whether you are streaming on your phone, computer or to a TV set .

Here is a tip, it’s faster to add or remove shows from the DVR from your computer compared to using the streaming media player.

Conclusion: Philo TV Review

If mostly you watch reality shows and documentaries, Philo TV could be your primary live tv streaming service. Just pair it with an antenna and pick up your local stations too.

For some, Philo can have enough of the missed networks from their main live television streaming service to warrant the additional subscription expense for at least part of the year.
