Chromecast can’t connect to your current Wifi! That’s what you need to understand when you see a message on your TV screen saying, “Can’t find Wi-Fi-network. Turn on your Google Home app to connect to a new wifi, or check settings for the network“.
The error message also says that there’s a connection problem between your streaming device with the wifi network. To fix it, you can try to connect your Chromecast to a different Wifi available. That’s what we are going to discuss in this post.
As you know, your Chromecast device can only remember one Wifi network at a time. It means, if you want to change the Wifi network, you must remove the existing Wifi network in advance and then connect it to the new one. This guide will walk you through the steps and make sure you can do it properly.
Besides, we will tell you how to reboot your Chromecast just in case you need to refresh the system or hardware.

How to connect your Chromecast to New Wifi
- Connect your Chromecast device to the same Wifi network as your phone or tablet.
It is important that you connect your Chromecast to a similar Wifi network as your phone, tablet, computer, especially if you have several Wifi networks available at home. So that your phone or tablet is able to recognize your streaming device. And you can set up your Chromecast through your phone/tablet.
- Launch the Google Home app on your phone or tablet.
To set up your Chromecast using your phone or tablet, you will need the Google Home app. Go grab your phone or tablet and open the app. If you don’t have it on your mobile device, you can download and install the app from Google Play Store or App Store for free.
- Select your streaming device on the app.
Once you launch the Google Home app, you will see a list of devices nearby, including your Chromecast. Tap your Chromecast device listed on your Google Home app.
- Forget the existed Wifi network
Since you are going to connect your Chromecast to a different Wifi network, you must forget the existed Wifi network in your streaming device in the first place. Why? It is because your streaming device can only remember one internet connection.
To do so, you can tap the gear icon at the top right corner and go to Settings > Wi-Fi > Forget this network.
- Add new device
As you have done removing the network from your streaming device, you will be taken back to the home page of the Google Home app. Now, it’s time to set up your Chromecast to connect to a new Wifi network.
Go to the top left and press Add (+) > Set up device > New device.
Then, the app will show a list of devices nearby. Choose your Chromecast from the list by tapping on it. Make sure that the Chromecast ID matches the one shown on your TV screen.
- Scan QR Code
On your TV screen, you will see a QR code. Use your phone to scan the QR code. Grant the permission if you see a notification on the app that asks for permission to use the camera. Once you scan the QR code, the app will guide you through setup.
You’ll probably have to choose the place where your streaming device is located. Select location of your device, whether it’s in the family room, bedroom, or other room. Once you choose the location, click Next.
- Connect to Wifi network
It’s time to connect your Chromecast to a new Wifi network available. Your streaming device will automatically detect some available Wifi networks nearby. Select the network that you want to connect to. If your Wifi requires a username and password, you can insert it using the Google Voice Remote. Then, tap Next.
The Chromecast will start to log on to the network. Once it is connected, you will be able to stream media online from your mobile phone or tablet.
Keep in mind that the Chromecast device only supports 2.4GHz networks. If you are using a 5GHz network, I’m afraid it will not work properly.
What to do if you can’t connect Chromecast to your Wifi?
Chromecast works amazingly as a streaming device. You can use it to cast not only your favorite shows and movies, but also photos and apps from your phone to a bigger screen effortlessly. All you need to do is to connect your Chromecast to the same Wifi network as your phone or tablet.
However, there are times when things doesn’t work as it should be. We’ve got a report that some users can’t connect Chromecast to their wifi though it works perfectly fine beforehand.
This issue can happen because you have changed either the Wifi’s name, password, or reset the network. Or, there are unknown reason due to hardware or software malfunction.
If this happens to you, you can reboot your Chromecast to get rid the issue. There are a slight difference of how to reboot your Chromecast according to the model. Follow the method based on the model of your Chromecast:
Method 1. Restart Chromecast with Google TV
- Grab your Chromecast Voice Remote.
- Go to the top right corner of your screen and choose profile > Settings.
- Choose System > Restart > Restart.
Method 2. Reboot Chromecast 1st gen, 2nd gen, 3rd gen, or Chromecast Ultra
- Connect your phone/tablet to the same Wifi network as your Chromecast.
- Open the Google Home app.
- Select your Chromecast device on the app.
- Go to Settings > More settings > Reboot.
Method 3. Restart Chromecast from the power source
This method works for all variants of Chromecast dongle. You can even combine this method with method 1 or 2.
- Unplug your Google TV from the power source.
- Let it be for one minute.
- Plug it again and turn it on.
How to connect Chromecast to Wifi without using the Google Home app?
Is it possible to connect your Chromecast to Wifi without using the Google Home app? Unfortunately, it is quite impossible to do because you will need the Google Home app on your mobile phone to manage the streaming dongle.
Google Home app is a primary application that you will need in order to set up and control your Chromecast device. Without it, you cannot do anything to your device.
